RGS The Grange, Worcester took part in the annual Matthew Thacker Memorial Football Tournament. In the group stages, the team were placed in Pool A - alongside hosts Winterfold House School, The Elms, Moor Park, Abberley Hall and The Downs, Malvern. After an encouraging opening game victory over The Elms, the side experienced a 0-0 draw with Winterfold House, followed by two successive victories against Moor Park and The Downs - before a loss in the final group game against Abberley.
Nonetheless, the squad had already secured top-spot in the group and qualified for the semi-final, where they would face local adversaries King’s Hawford. A highly competitive and committed match ensued, culminating in a 2-0 RGS victory.
In the Final, with the wind kicking up and cold intensifying, the boys contested a close encounter with the Edgbaston side - and old foes - Hallfield School. As expected, despite best efforts from both sides, the deadlock could not be broken and consequently the game entered extra-time and continued to the ultimate differential, the infamous penalty shoot-out.
Considering that this year’s tournament marked the tenth year since Matthew’s passing, it was fitting that the Matthew Thacker Shield was presented by Matthew’s mother - to her godson and eventual scorer of the tournament winning penalty, for RGS The Grange.
Aside from the outcome, we would like to thank and congratulate all players and parents for their sportsmanship, support and conduct in what was a poignantly spirited afternoon of tournament football.
