Edge Grove welcomed Absolute Radio DJ, Christian O’Connell through its school gates recently for a passionate and inspirational talk about the release of his new novel ‘Radio Boy’. Children at Edge Grove were treated to a very entertaining and humorous talk given by the DJ and author about his latest book where he talked about his own childhood and stressed the importance of the value of taking risks and learning from personal failures.
The talk reiterated the schools’ focus for that week on how young people in childhood can learn from their own personal failures and disappointments and how this can often stem from risk taking.
Ben Evans, Headmaster at Edge Grove school commented on the visit: “It was fantastic for the children to hear childhood stories from Christian not to mention his very entertaining and funny anecdotes. Through his words he encouraged the children to dream, to have passions and to be curious and have perseverance in life, which couldn’t fit more perfectly with our own learning culture and ethos here at Edge Grove.”
Discussing the inspiration behind his latest novel, Radio Boy, Christian echoed the importance of many of the schools’ guiding principles and behaviours for learning and development offering the children some real food for thought.
Christian explained that the book itself is centred around an 11 year old boy called Spike who becomes the first presenter ever to be sacked from hospital radio; he decides to continue in a make shift studio in his garden shed with help from his two best friends, disguising his voice and going my the name Radio Boy.
A Year 8 pupil, Dante Doros contacted the author initially and asked him to speak at the school, thankfully Dante’s persistence paid off and the visit was arranged.
