During the summer, Moulsford Prep's Leo Robinson competed in the final round of the European Karting Championships in Salbris, France. The long and flowing track presented a particular challenge to the drivers with several combination corners and a long straight.
Leo was delayed leaving the pits for qualifying and missed the opportunity to run in formation and slipstream his team mates on the fast straight. He did well, however, to qualify in 8th position for the qualifying heats. Leo was unfortunately the victim of a first corner incident in the first heat, and finished last. His form and fortune improved in the remaining heats with 7th and 3rd place finishes. The combined scores resulted in Leo starting in a disappointing 12th position for the pre-final, which was to be the first of the championship points scoring races.
For the pre-final, the weather changed in Leo’s favour with damp and overcast conditions and a slippery track. After a cautious start, his wet weather experience soon began to show. Leo made a string of committed passes to race through the midfield pack, gaining 9 places. Once clear, he set a series of fastest laps in pursuit of the leading pair. Leo closed to within a few seconds at the chequered flag but was content to finish in 3rd position.
Leo started in that position for the final and, benefitting from being on the inside of the track, he gained a place by the first corner. The three leaders then pulled well clear of the field and raced closely together with a number of lead changes over the following laps. Leo worked his way into the lead on the final lap but was unable to hold his advantage over the last few corners. All three karts crossed the line within 1/10th of a second, with Leo in 3rd place. The combined results of all rounds resulted in Leo also finishing in 3rd place in the overall championship standings.
The reward for Leo’s success is entry to the World Finals in Le Mans and the US Championships in Las Vegas later this year. Congratulations to Leo!
