The Bishop’s Stortford College U12 Football team has been crowned U12 District Football Champions after defeating five local schools at the U12 District Football Tournament held at Birchwood School on Friday 28th February.
A total of twelve local schools competed in the tournament in incredibly difficult playing conditions thanks to torrential rain, which created patches of standing water on the pitches.
A comprehensive 3-0 win over Helena Romanes School kicked off a promising afternoon for the College team with two goals from Elijah U and another from Sam C. Following up with a 1-0 win over Joyce Frankland, the team needed to beat Leventhorpe in the final group game to guarantee a place in the semi-finals. A 2-1 win secured a semi-final place for the boys.
Up against Edwinstree, the U12 College boys started well and looked strong going forward. In a momentary defensive lapse, Stanley G, in his debut outing for the College, made an exceptional point blank save to keep the team in the game. A winning goal from Elijah U ensured the team’s passage to the final.
Facing St Mary’s in the final, the College boys continued to create chances and Finnlay P smashed home the winner for the College shortly before the final whistle blew.
David Herd, the U12 Boys’ Football Coach commented, “Our boys showed tremendous character in the worst possible weather conditions. Well done to all the players who matched great work rate with some high quality passing and finishing. Special mention to our goalkeeper, Stanley G, whose handling and distribution was secure and confident.”
The College would like to extend its congratulations to the whole squad, Elijah U (c), Stanley G, Samuel C, Henry H, Nathan L, Finnlay P, H Connolly, Alex C-B and Freddie H, who have now doubled up on their achievements, having won the IAPS Football National Finals in November.
