Stroud School holds languages and culture day

On Thursday 7 November, Stroud School in Romsey held its Language and Culture Day.

Held every two years, the aim of this day is to promote language, culture and civilisations. The focus of the day was on French, Spanish, German and Japanese languages, however, the school also ran some fantastic activities that touched on other cultures, such as Portuguese, Afrikaan, Turkish, Danish, Punjabi and Chinese /Mandarin.

During the day, the children enjoyed many cross-curricular events and activities based on different cultural traditions. From making and eating croissants in their French lesson, and peppermint creams to the sound of Scottish Pipes, the children also experienced Japanese sessions, Chinese storytelling and, probably one of the favourite activities, welly dancing. In Art, they created some ‘calacas y calaveras’, which are a symbol of the ‘Day of the Dead’ celebrated in the whole of Latin America and California, and were treated to professional lessons in Latin dancing, where they tried their best at learning the Salsa, Paso Doble and Cha Cha Cha.

Stroud is very keen to expose its pupils to as many different languages as possible. The School believes that a greater language learning experience leads to the development of the skills and confidence needed for children to perceive themselves as ‘Global Citizens’. Stroud School believes it is paramount that children are given the opportunity to become multi-lingual as the immersion in a foreign culture can open new avenues of self-exploration and personal growth.
