A team of Prep pupils from The Marist School, Sunninghill, have won a prestigious FIRST LEGO League Challenge trophy at a Regional Tournament held at Queen Mary University, London. Competing as one of the youngest teams, ‘The Marist Missioneers’ were awarded the trophy for ‘Best Newcomer’.

Following in the footsteps of last year’s winning Marist Senior team, Years 4-6 pupils Alice, Elizabeth, Emily, Isabella, Isla, Jemima, Lucy and Minnie were excited to win the trophy after working towards the challenge as part of their STEM club.

Speaking about the group’s success, Mrs Caroline O’Sullivan, Teacher of Science said: “The Marist won the Best Newcomer trophy and as one of the youngest teams present, we were thrilled by the result. The girls demonstrated great teamwork, problem solving, and perseverance throughout. It was a fantastic experience for them to participate in one of the biggest global STEM competitions.”

The FIRST LEGO League is a global STEM challenge for young people and every year, a challenge is released which is based on a real-world scientific topic. The focus of the three-part City Shaper Challenge this year was on shaping the future of cities. In the Robot Game, girls had to code an autonomous robot to carry out tasks on a city map. Next, they had to identify and solve a problem as part of the Innovation Project and finally everything had to be underpinned by the FIRST LEGO League’s Core Values of discovery, innovation, impact, inclusion, teamwork and fun.

Summarising the experience, Mrs Jane Gow, Vice Principal of the Preparatory Phase at The Marist said: “Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) is a huge focus for The Marist School as we recognise the importance of an inspiring and inclusive, hands-on, curriculum for all of our pupils. This competition has given our pupils the opportunity to think like engineers and scientists and I am extremely proud of their achievements in winning the trophy for ‘Best Newcomer’."
